Product Description
Sylvania SilverStar Ultra High Performance Halogen Headlight is fashioned for brighter and whiter light. It has dual filament for both high beam and low beam. This operates with internal gas pressure which significantly reduces the rate of tungsten evaporation. Its analogous non-halogen incandescent lamp operates the same filament temperature with greater luminance and efficiency. This combined effect of higher pressure and the halogen cycle give halogen lamp much longer life.Customer Reviews
Short life but bright lightI bought these lights to help see at night and they perform very well. But the back of the package says that they only perform about a quarter of the time the normal bulbs last. If I knew what it said on the back of the package I would have bought some HID conversion headlights. Live and Learn.
Great light, short life, as advertised
Consistent with the information on the back of the package that shows the comparative strengths and weaknesses of each of the bulb types, the Ultra High Performance gives outstanding light performance, down the road, to the sides...you name it. The light that comes from these bulbs is noticeably whiter and brighter than any other halogen bulbs. But also, as shown on the back of the package, on a scale of 1 to 5 bars, the bulb life of this type only rates 1 bar, and it's lived up to that rating as well.
Unfortunately, none of the inferior types of 9006 bulb rates more than 2 bars on life, except the lowly Standard type, which offers the poorest light performance but 5 bars on life. And because I REALLY don't like removing the battery to change the driver's side bulb, I'm opting for long life after replacing these far too frequently. If you don't mind changing (or paying to change) your bulbs frequently, this is a great option; but for me, 3 stars is all I can give a bulb with such a short life, even with superb lighting.
Sylvania 9006SU BP SilverStar Ultra High Performance Halogen Headlight - Pack of 2
Sylvania halogen headlights are a great replacement for OEM headlight bulbs. I highly recommend them. They are MUCH brighter and illuminating than the standard OEM replacement bulbs. The negatives are that they are more expensive and won't last nearly as long as the OEM bulbs. However, I believe the trade-off is well worth it; especially when safety is a major concern. I drive with the lights on during the daytime as well as the nighttime and other drivers notice me immediately. I haven't been disappointed with these headlight bulbs.
Great bulb
The silverstar ultra bulbs are very bright. I put them on my 83 yr old fathers suburban for added saftey. You will notice a big difference from stock bulb. The price on amazon was 2 bulb pack for about the price of 1 bulb from local parts store. Only 4 stars due to reduced bulb life...they won't last as long. You may want to carry a spare bulb in vehicle if you do a lot of night driving.
Good lights, but burn out like clockwork
These lights really enhance visibility over standard headlight bulbs, but they are virtually guaranteed to burn out quickly. It even tells you that on the box. One of the two just burned out less than a month after the 12-month guarantee period Sylvania claims on the box, and that's with under 6000 miles of driving. That said, I'm either going to buy them again and suck up the fact that they will have to be replaced every year, or I will look into an HID conversion. I can't wait until LED is good enough for headlights.
Bottom line, I think it's crazy not to have this kind of visibility at night, even if it costs $30/year. And please DO get Sylvania to replace your bulbs if either one burns out sooner! I've done it before, and it usually takes just a phone call or email.

Not bright, but brighter, and whiteFirst of all, American cars mostly using low wattage light bulbs (which is good cause most misadjusted lights don't bother you that much) and power supplied through the headlight switch.
Therefore, lights are not really "bright". Also, if you have old or worn headlight, the best bulbs won't make a difference.
I used these bulbs in a '99 Marquis, except for the lights to appear much whiter; we did not notice any difference in brightness. Lights and reflectors were in great shape.
At the same time we put them into a '99 Intrepid, and wow, what a difference!
First off all: The headlight color is white. This is even more dramatic at a clear night, when sitting next to a car without these bulbs.
Second: They are slightly brighter. Don't believe any of the ads telling you that you can suddenly see 100 feet further, this is impossible due to legality as you would blind oncoming traffic. But the beam is wider; you have a bigger "spot of light" in front of you.
Third: During rain, I found that these lights provide a sharper contrast between the falling rain (clear raindrops) and other objects. The beam of light on the road seems to be "crisper".
End of story: I think they are worth it.
better than I thought they would be,,,
I polished the clear covers first, it helped about 50%. Then I tried the Farenheit blue high wattage bulbs; they were brighter but they had that blue tint that was hard for me to get used to. I've had the Sylvania's in for about a month now and there is a 100% improvement over the stock ones. I would buy them again.
Decent
These headlights look nice, and increase visibility as they say. If you're looking for a superbright bulb, these aren't what they seem to be. They have a pure-white look, which looks nice. Overall 4/5
Good product but not as far beam as expected.
When i saw these headlights on TV i decided to give them a try. The night that i got them i went for a night drive they were good but the problem is there only 30% brighter and were just awful in the rain. I have since switched to an HID kit and wow the kit is alot brighter whider and farther than the silverstaars imo. If you really want brighter whiter light then buy an HID kit it may be expensive but in the long run it lasts longer and is brighter and whiter. In other words get an HID kit.
Not really such a bright idea
I got these bulbs so I could see better on dark roads with a whiter light. It says 50% brighter and etc. I didn't notice a whole lot of difference and paid a lot more to switch over. Here is the kicker that did not display in the ad online. On the back it says because they burn brighter they last only about a year as compared to regular bulbs that last 8 to 10 years.

Nice and clean white light, but only lasted 4-6 months. My Wife's Honda van gets used multiple times a day and she turns on the headlights every-time she gets behind the wheel. I really liked how much brighter they are over the regular bulbs, but I had to replace one after 4 months and then last one after 6 months so a little disappointing in that regard.
bad bulbs
I recieved and installed these bulbs last august. One dim just burned out. Not even 10 months. Shameful. The oem's lasted over 6 years!
Worked for a little while....
When I got the bulbs last year, they worked great. Then, out of nowhere, the low beam stopped working. Lasted for a little over a year. I had cheap knock-offs from eBay on a friend's car last longer than these.
GREAT INVESTMENT.... SO FAR
We just bought these about a week ago and installed them and wow what a difference they make. Are old ones where getting to the point where it was hard to see unless it was on brights and when we got these installed there was a huge differance. They light very well and iluminate your driving area great! They are about as bright on low beam as our old lights were on high beam, which still worked for us just fine. The high beam is great on these and I hope they last a while to come! ON the back of the packaging it does say that they will not last as long as other bulbs, but that's what you get the brighter the bulb the less the life is with these sylvania bulbs.
Cool blue Headlights
Great shipping time. Product is great and really like how the blue light illuminates country roads for better visibility. Thanks for offering help on how-to install the lights. Thanks

I noticed a big difference!I have read reviews for this product that said that the users did not notice a difference. And while I will admit, I do not know how old the lights I replaced were (all standard lights loose candle power as they get older) but, having said that... I love these lights! Where I noticed the biggest difference is with reflector surfaces like signs and warning markers. Man, these things just jump out at you! And from a huge distance away! They were simple to install and fit perfectly. Great price too!
Bright Idea!
Love these lights. Not the eye killers you see on the roads today but bright enough to do the job and light up the road.
Satisfied Thus Far
Due to tougher economic times, I decided that when my 1999 1/2 New Jetta's passenger side headlight went out, that I'd replace them myself. I'd never replaced headlight bulbs myself before so I had to look up the proper model and these Sylvania XtraVision's seemed to have the right balance of performance, price and longevity. I was excited to see the difference between the OEM's and the XtraVisions.
Unfortunately, my old mechanic must have liked these too as the XtraVisions were the ones already installed. I don't remember when he replaced them so I don't know what the lifespan was. I'll update my review should they go out in the near or distant future. My Jetta has daytime running lights so it should be interesting to see what impact that has on the lifespan. I also want to note that since I didn't even know that I had different bulbs when they were changed out, I did not notice a difference in visibility.
Still, if my VW mechanic who also services Audi's, chose to use the Sylvania XtraVision halogen bulbs, I'm pretty confident that these are more than acceptable for my use.
disappointed
Just swapped these into my 2004 Ford Excursion from the stock bulbs. I was hoping for a brighter/farther lighting pattern as the stockers are woefully weak.
I did a comparison test against the overhead garage doors, including before and after pics.
There is absolutely NO difference in intensity/brightness between the new and old.
Seriously disappointed.
I will be spending several hundered afterall to get some high quality halogen driving lights
The best legal upgrade for your 9007 headlights
Most, if not all, vehicles are equipped with Long Life 9007 bulbs from the factory. Long Life usually means the bulbs were designed with filaments and gas mixtures designed to extend the duration at which the light output remains usable, up to approximately 800-1300 hours in a laboratory environment. This is in comparison to 2500-5000 hours from HID capsules (D1/D2/D3/D4) which cost $100-$250 per capsule to replace. In addition, white LED headlights/foglights last approximately 25,000 to 50,000 hours.
Sylvania does not keep it a secret that their SilverStar and SilverStar Ultra line of headlights are not designed for longevity. According to Sylvania for their 9007s, their SilverStar lasts 150 hours, the SilverStar Ultra lasts 200 hours, while the XtraVision lasts 375 hours. The 9008/H13 standard bulb can go up to 1000 hours, while the Sylvania SilverStar 9008/H13 is rated at only 325 hours and the 9008/H13 XtraVision is rated for 500 hours.
In the SilverStars, the gas mixture and filaments were designed to compensate for the loss of light transmission from the filter (tint) on the bulb glass. The SilverStars are essentially "ricer" bulbs designed to make the color temperature appear near 4000K (HID white) but this costs you lifespan.
From experience, the XtraVisions will last at least 3-4 years of normal use (about 30 minutes every workday). Daytime Running Lights and automatic headlights SEVERELY reduce bulb lifespan because they keep the bulbs running at full voltage whenever you use the car contrary to popular belief. In addition, headlight bulbs are rated at 12.8 VDC, which means that the rated hours were obtained from testing at 12.8 VDC. Running the bulbs at a higher voltage, like the 14.0 VDC that most charging systems produce, will dramatically reduce bulb life. So this is not a surprise that SilverStar owners are getting 3-6 months of use out of their bulbs.
I have used XtraVisions on 3 different cars over the past 7 years and have the utmost confidence in the lighting power. They are still halogens and produce a 3200K "white", but there is a DRAMATIC difference from factory Standard or Long Life 9007s. They make all reflective objects light up, and I can see a bit farther down the road. I've tested GE Nighthawk 9007s and they produce a slightly whiter light with about the same light output, so either the XtraVision or GE Nighthawk 9007s are the best halogen upgrade.
The ultimate lighting solution would be a street-legal HID upgrade, which is cost prohibitive for most owners and requires a lot of work to install. The next best thing would be XtraVision bulbs.
Pros: The best bulb upgrade you can get with a decent lifespan (about 800 hours). Totally street legal, and a big improvement over Standard or LL bulbs. Can be purchased at discount prices.
Cons: Still a 3200K halogen "white" which is yellow compared to HIDs. Confusing marketing causes most people to buy SilverStar / Ultra bulbs instead. The lifespan isn't nearly as good as HID or LED.
Overall: 5/5 stars for what it is: affordable upgrade for existing lighting.

Very nice upgrade, while they last...The color is much closer to "pure white" (around 6500 Kelvin I believe), which is far easier on the eyes then the yellow light cast by standard quartz halogen bulbs. They project further and wider too, which makes driving at night in dark areas -- which I do quiet frequently -- much easier. The only drawback is longevity; they have none.
You should consider yourself lucky if you get 1 year out of them. To a certain extent this happens with all of the "ultra white" style of bulbs, those that use blue filter tints on the glass capsule and gas other then halogen -- usually xenon or argon -- to create the additional intensity and color. Considering they cost several times more then convention bulbs that's a fairly significant issue. But while they work it's a very noticeable improvement.
I can see clearly now.....
These were replacments for my Silverstar bulbs that were already in place. Now if you are debating these bulbs, and have standard bulbs now, then its a no brainer... get them. If you are like me, and just have to have the best, then maybe just wait on these. I like to have new bulbs anyway, but I really could not tell the diference between the Silverstar, and Silverstar Ultra. But my brother in law liked them. He was the recipiant of my standard Silverstars.... he loves them.
Definite Improvement
Having always been disatisfied with the illumination of the headlights on my truck, I found the Silverstar Ultra blulbs to be a definite improvement. Are they as bright as Sylvania claims? I don't think so, and I have to say I would have been very disappointed if I paid $49.95 (which is the price I found at the local auto parts stores), but that said, I definitely think they are worth the price I got them for here.
Not much life, not much (more) light
I purchased a pair of these in March 2009 from Amazon. There was a rebate so the price wasn't terrible. That is about the best news.
The light output was not notably higher than the standard halogen bulbs in my Maxima. 10 months later, one has already burned out. The product packaging warns of short life. What it doesn't warn is that the product, at least to my perception, doesn't provide much more light from a standard bulb in real world situations.
My headlight bulbs aren't difficult to change but I wouldn't put these things in again if someone gave them to me. Just not enough more light...even IF the life of the bulb was decent.
Whiter and brighter, but not for long
These bulbs appear both whiter and brighter than the two Sylvanias I replaced. I have edited this review because one of the bulbs burned out after only a few weeks. Amazon sent a replacement package, but I've already installed another brand. So the jury is still out on this one.

Frequently Asked Questions When Replacing Or Changing Car Bulbs
If you need to replace or upgrade your car bulbs, whether it is headlight bulbs, sidelight bulbs, indicator bulbs or even brake light bulbs, finding out exactly which type of bulbs you need and how to fit them correctly can sometimes prove quite a challenge. The easy option is to take you car down to the local main dealer and ask them to the bulbs for you, although you will certainly have to pay a hefty premium for the parts and labour.
However with the right knowledge and a few simple tools you can quite easily do the job yourself, and make considerable financial savings in the process. In order to help you understand what is required when buying and changing vehicle bulbs this guide has been designed to answer the most commonly asked questions.
How can I find out which car bulbs are fitted to my vehicle?
Initially you should consult the car owners manual, normally all of the bulbs fitted and their locations will be listed within it. Alternatively there are now some very good search tools on the internet, whereby you enter your vehicle’s, make, model and year and it will show you which bulbs you require. One point to note is that whilst he owners manual or online search tools are very accurate, occasionally the vehicle manufacturer will change the design, specification or parts supplier during a production run so inaccuracies can occasionally occur.
Should I replace my car bulbs in pairs?
If you are changing your headlight bulbs or sidelight bulbs then the answer is yes, and this makes good sense for two reasons. Firstly if one headlight bulb has blown the other one will follow quite shortly so if you change them both together you wont need to worry about repeating the job for a while. The second reason is that as headlight bulbs get towards the end of their service life their performance starts to reduce, and so if you only changed...
